You are the coolest guy I know, and I don't even know you. I have always loved the outdoors and hiked countless trail segments (mostly the AT) but the incredible challenge of hiking the USA's four longest trails is insurmountable. Thank you for the inspiration to go further, hike longer, and experience more of our nature's fleeting beauty. All I can say is thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
So..dude...here's the deal...the only failure is to never try for yer dreams...like in the military...ya gotta adapt to the situ...get well, crazy guy..nothin's crazy if its done with a pure vision.."look up !!'

I'm sure you're bummed as you said but as you said it's best not to dwell on that. I only can estimate the type of person you are from your journal entries but no doubt you want to live a life less ordinary and I relate. But you don't need to live it under a microscope do you? All the media and attention can be a double edged sword.
Hang in there and keep doing what you need to do, but a comment...there is nothing lost in living your life for you and not for the public's viewing pleasure. The all in hike would be just as cool without the web attetion.
I sincerely wish you the best of luck whether you wanna hike or not.

Sad to hear you are getting off the trail! BUT, it is likely a good choice & will allow you to hike stronger when you get back. Prolly you are bummed out right now, don't be, as is often quoted in the long distance hiking crowd "It's only hiking!" :)
Also, if this pain hasn't gotten better &, as it seems to be getting worse, you are likely to do more damage by "Toughing it out".
FWIW: if it turns out to be arthritis, Yep even at your age, give Glucosamine & Chondroitin a try. It will take a few weeks to "kick in" but it's supposed to help lubricate your joints, so,,,,,,,,
Have a good hike!

Sam, I have followed your journals and listened to your issues with your hip. This will not be an instant fix, and I am not sure how much it will help. I would encourage you to change your diet to eat no meat or as little as possible. Definitely cut out all pork products. What meat you do eat make it beef, chicken, turkey, fish with fins and scales - no shrimp, lobster, clam. Hey what do you have to lose - other than a sore hip. What you fuel your body with does have an impact on how it performs.

If you need a pickup or a supply delivery I'd love to help you out. I have chosen a lifestyle that is mutually exclusive of this type of adventure but rest assured I long for this type of thing. In 2008 we took 3 months off and backpacked in New Zealand. It changed my life and have since decided to leave the business world to become a National Park Ranger so I can make the outdoors my living. I admire you for taking this on and look forward to following you throughout the year.
We're in MN and will gladly come meet with you/help you restock on the NCT when you hit Minnesota. We did the section around Itasca last year and loved it. You get to cross the Mississippi River, after all!
Wanted to tell you, too, if you're looking for more funding you might want to look into kickstarter.com as a fundraising option.
Good luck!!
All the best,

The section in the Park has some excellent lean-to's. Call if you need help - 716-969-1483. Best wishes and maybe I will see you on the trail. This is amazing. Having only really gotten into hiking last year, I can't say I'm on any sort of level to attempt such an extensive trek as what you shall be facing, but it's stories like this that inspire me to get to this level at some point. I wish you good luck on your trip and hope to keep up with it as you carry on your travels.

In reference to Sam's difficulty finding his way around today. His gear list includes a Garmin eTrex GPS. Does he know how to operate it? Garmin has really helpful tech support. I bet if Sam gives them a call he'll be really stoked about what a great resource they are! haha

Your Aunt Sarah and I and our hiking group hiked in snow today in NC! It's a novel experience around Charlotte, NC, as we don't get much snow here. Sarah was telling the group about your experience and read a few of your latest journal entries. Good luck - stay warm!

Just wanted to let you know once the NCT starts to coincide with the FLT, the blazes turn from blue to white. The two trails coincide for 380 miles until you leave New York State and enter the Allegheny National Forest in PA... Then they turn back to blue...
